Measure and photograph the stump
Measure the widest point at ground level and include surrounding surface roots. Photograph the approach from the street or driveway, including gates, steps, slopes, landscape edging, irrigation components, and nearby structures that could limit grinder access.
Choose the outcome you need
Tell providers whether the area will become lawn, a planting bed, new construction, or simply remain mulched. Grinding depth and root removal needs vary by the intended use. Grinding does not remove the entire underground root system, and some species may produce sprouts after the trunk is removed.
Clarify chips, soil, and utilities
Grinding can produce a large volume of mixed wood chips and soil. Ask whether those materials will be left, spread, or hauled away and whether clean fill is included. Before excavation or deep grinding, underground utilities and private irrigation or lighting lines may need to be identified.
